S.Maria
La chiesa ed il Convento di S. Maria del Cengio è senza dubbio l’edificio religioso , sia storicamente che artisticamente, più importante di Isola Vicentina .
Dapprima vi fu un piccolo edificio religioso, una cappella, di cui si hanno notizia fin dal 1192.
A metà del 1400 fu costruito il convento vero e proprio con l’insediamento di una iniziale Comunità di Brigidini e , per trecento anni circa, dei Canonici di S. Salvatore.
Nella sua travagliata storia ha conosciuto lunghi momenti di abbandono e di incuria :
dalla soppressione della vita conventuale del 1771 fino alla sua rinascita di fine Ottocento e all’insediamento dei Servi di Maria nel 1905, all’incendio del 1931 .
- The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Cengio is without doubt the most famous church in Isola Vicentina. It is also a very old church. We find it mentioned for the first time in records from the twelfth century, although it probably existed even earlier than that as a shelter for wayfarers and pilgrims.
The church building was renovated and given to the monks at San Brigida in the early fifteenth century.
It served to house the monks until the monastery could be built.
In 1462, the Lateranense canons from San Bartolomeo di Vicenza took over the church.
The fifteenth-century style of the building has been preserved in spite of the numerous changes that have been made to it.
